June 26, 2007

Attendees:

Kay Bouyack, Jan Broughton, Hilda Drake, Betsy Fannin, Susan McComas Barb Nourse, Jennifer Schackart, Paige Williams, Treva Williams, Debra Knutson

The June 2007 meeting of the Board of Directors of the Literacy Council of Scioto County was held in the Scioto Foundation.  The meeting was brought to order at 4:00 by President Hilda Drake.

Due to Jim Wayne’s absence, there was no formal treasurer’s report.  However, Wayne did send word that there had been no change to the treasury since May.

The search committee reported on their interviews and recommended that we hire Susan McComas as Coordinator.  McComas introduced herself to the Board and discussed her experience with literacy programs.  McComas developed a family literacy program in Wayne County.  She likes working with the public, likes nonprofit work, and has grant writing experience and computer skills.  During her seven years of library work, she managed the library’s website.  She is a member of Rotary.

Jan Broughton stated that since we are about to hire a Coordinator, we need to officially “roll out” LCSC and introduce the Coordinator to the community.  Broughton will discuss publicizing and promoting LCSC with Rita Rice Morris and Randy Arnett.

Treva Williams discussed her overview of the March Literacy Forum and her research and strategic planning.

The Board asked Susan McComas to leave the room so that we could discuss her candidacy.  On behalf of the search committee, Kay Bouyack moved we hire McComas for one year, noting that she will be expected to work approximately 20 hours per week and that she will earn $20,000 for this work.  Barb Nourse seconded the motion.  Motion passed unanimously.

Bouyack noted that Jim Wayne will be taking care of the financials and has been working with an accountant, Scott Reynolds, to make sure that LCSC handles everything appropriately.  Reynolds has suggested that we create a financial form for the Coordinator to fill out.  Wayne will work on this form with Reynolds.

Bouyack is looking into purchasing a computer for the Coordinator’s use.  Because the Coordinator’s office will be in the Clark Memorial Library on SSU’s campus, this computer must be compatible with SSU requirements.  Bouyack is researching funding for the computer.

McComas was invited back to the room and offered the position, which she accepted.  She noted that she would like each Board member to email her the names of five individuals who work with literacy providers in the area.  These names will help her make her initial contacts with literacy providers.  Members can contact her at her personal email (sjmc54@yahoo.com) until her LCSC email is up and running.

The meeting adjourned at 5:00.  The July meeting will be held at 4:00 on July 24 in the Scioto Foundation.

Respectfully submitted,

Debra S. Knutson, LCSC Secretary
