Our Founders:
In 2004, chief administrators of these three significant institutions: Southern Ohio Medical Center, Shawnee State University and Portsmouth City Schools concluded that their leadership could make a fundamental difference in Scioto County by the formation of a Literacy Council.
This important initiative set forth through their efforts and support in Scioto County will enhance communication among current literacy service providers and increase awareness of services available to the general public. In addition to better communication, the Literacy Council will foster and support community literacy efforts through promotion and collaboration among the providers.
The ultimate goals of these three executives of increasing the high school graduation rates, developing a more marketable workforce, and enabling more persons to seek higher education have been placed in the hands of the Literacy Council’s Board of Trustees and recently appointed Director.
The Literacy Council, serving as a catalyst, will ensure improved communication among existing agencies and organizations through events and meetings promoting literacy. A permanent website will be managed allowing easy access to appropriate funding resources, data and statistics, and contact information for literacy services in Scioto County.
A needs assessment for the project is in its final stages and will reveal target areas and/or gaps in literacy services in Scioto County in addition to the barriers that those in need of literacy services face daily.
Now 2007, a Board of Trustees, a Director and working committees are launching this meaningful initiative to engage Scioto County individuals, children and families in life-long learning opportunities to succeed.
This has been made possible by the insight, knowledge, dedication, and strength of these community leaders.
