Every Month is Literacy Month at the LCSC!

Join the Literacy Council of Scioto County in celebrating the joys of reading! Although National Literacy Month has come and gone, we at the LCSC believe that literacy is something to be celebrated throughout the year. We encourage you to pick up a book and join us - whether you’re reading for yourself or reading to a child. Or if you’d like to find some other ways to become involved, here are a few suggestions from the LCSC:

·         Show your support of public libraries by getting a library card, using their many free services and participating in their many programs. Click here to see what’s going on at your local branch of the Portsmouth Public Library.

·         Volunteer for a literacy program and help make a difference in the lives of children and adults in Scioto County. Use our provider directory to find an organization that can use your help.

·         Watch a movie! More than half of this year’s most popular DVD releases were based on a book or short story. So rent the movie, and then read the book that inspired it! Here’s a list of some recent movie and DVD releases that are based on books.

·         Share your story of “the book that got you hooked.” What was the first book that inspired your love of reading? Was it a trip to a hair-raising quest to slay dragons and warlocks? Or was it something as simple as The Cat in the Hat? Our friends at The Literacy Site are offering you the chance to not only share your reading memories, but also to provide a first book to children around the world. Just go to their website, and click on the orange button.

Of course, there are hundreds of other ways to celebrate literacy in our lives on a daily basis. But however you choose to participate, the LCSC salutes you and wishes you good reading!
